Magura HS33 hydraulic rim brake
Sam, Johnny and Matt use these brakes for trials. We generally prefer them to v-brakes because thy are more powerful, theres no cable stretch with them and thye feel really smooth when you pull the lever whereas on v-brakes dirt can get in the cables making them feel 'gritty'. They may be hard to set up but when you get the hang of it they are the best rim brakes going in our opinion. You can buy these pads from any decent bike shop or most mail order companies for about £100 for the pair. We give these brakes a 5/5. |
Plazmatic CRM brake pads
Sam has these pads on the back of his merlin. They need no tar or grinding and have wonderful performance in the dry. This means you dont have to worry about your braking as you will have consistent braking all the time in the dry. They give you much more confidence as you know your brake WONT slip! They do not have much grip in the wet as there are no grooves in the pad, BUT plazmatic are making a new 'spanish fly' pads which are a harder compound for people who still want to use tar or grind their rims, there are grooves for braking in the wet too. The plazmatic CRM pads are available from http://www.x-street.net and re £28 for 4. Expensive but worth it! Sam gives these pads 5/5. |

Onza t-bird 20 inch
This is johnnys bike. Its nicer to hop than 26inch bikes but harder to roll things. This bike is light, comes with nice brakes (avid AD3 F+R), grippy Maxxis holy roller tires, the wheels are made by Alex and are light and strong, the small onza trials seat is ideal for trials as it is out of the wayand the onza flat bar and stem are just right for the geometry of the bike. Johnnys only problem with this bike is the freewheel going twice (allthough johhny has had the bike since the bike show in april). You can buy this bike from http://www.onzabikes.co.uk and it is around £220. Johnny gives this bike a 5/5. |
IRC El Gato tires
Sam and Matt have these tires on their bikes. We like them because they are grippy and are quite wide. Our only gripes are they say that they have puncture protection but i find that if you dont run 35psi+ they puncture easily on concrete ledges and that they are heavy. You can get these tires from most mail order companies and they are £25 each. We give this tire 4/5.

Handsomedog rockstar fork
Sam used to have these forks. At first they look good and look strong and they're quite light. Sam says they were fine for the first few weeks but he landed a gap hard and the front went down hard and they cracked at the crown of the fork and bent, after that they just got worse and worse until they cracked by the drop-outs and the wheel wouldnt go in properly! All i can say is Dont buy these forks, buy the handsomedog rockhound fork instead, theyre only £10 more. If you really want to you can get these forks from http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk for around £40. Sam gives these forks 1/5. |
